About Milner Lake Wildlife Management Area

Milner Lake Wildlife Management Area (WMA) spans over a diverse stretch of wetlands and upland habitats in Sheridan and Roosevelt counties of northeastern Montana. Established to conserve critical waterfowl breeding and migratory habitat, this protected area provides vital ecological support for numerous bird species, including ducks, geese, and shorebirds. The wetlands within the WMA are interspersed with native grasslands and shrublands, supporting a variety of wildlife such as white-tailed deer, sharp-tailed grouse, and other upland game birds. The area’s mosaic of marshes, ponds, and riparian zones creates a productive ecosystem offering feeding, nesting, and resting opportunities for many species.

Milner Lake WMA is managed by the Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks department with an emphasis on habitat management and public hunting opportunities. Anglers visit its waters for species like northern pike and various panfish, while hunters target waterfowl during designated seasons. The WMA does not have developed campgrounds or designated trails but offers dispersed access and opportunities for birdwatching, photography, and hunting. It remains a quieter destination for outdoor enthusiasts seeking natural wetland environments and solitude in a less-developed setting. The landscape’s flat terrain, dominated by open water and grasses, supports spectacular seasonal migrations, making spring and fall ideal times for wildlife viewing. Visitors enjoy observing varied migratory patterns under expansive skies and often encounter a peaceful, rural Montana atmosphere that reflects the region’s agricultural roots.
